Cherry Bowl

This 8.5 by 3 inch cherry bowl is the latest project to emerge from the wood shop.  While working with Cherry is pretty standard and predictable, this particular piece presented its own unique challenges and opportunities.

When this bowl was still a square block of Cherry it was apparent that some checking had occurred.  I was concerned about this so I chose to put the worst check on the bottom of the bowl, knowing that if there was a failure I could curve the bottom of the piece to compensate.  The check did fail and I had to rather drastically curve the bottom section to recover the piece.

This was not a piece of clear Cherry by any means.  There were several knots that created complications, especially one of the upper rim.  The knots were difficult to cut cleanly and they also made clean cuts around them difficult as well.  The sanding process around these knots was especially difficult.

Despite the difficulties, I think these “imperfections” in the Cherry make the final product more interesting.

The bowl was cut with Easy Wood Tools, including the new negative rake cutter for final fine cuts.  The Cherry bowl is finished with Watco Cherry Oil.

I don’t believe that this piece is the finest example of my work in Cherry but I am pleased enough with it as it stands.
