Jobilo

I was excited to work with Jobilo as I thought it was a new wood with which I had not worked before, but, alas, I have come to discover that Jobilo is a synonym for a wood that I have worked with before, Gonçalo Alves.  It is not at all uncommon for exotic woods to be sold under a variety of synonyms.  Some sources claim that Jobilo is used to describe especially fine grades of Gonçalo Alves.

Jobilo

At any rate, I have covered all of the basics of Gonçalo Alves (Jobilo) in a previous post and the experience, a very positive one, remains the same.

This is a quite small bowl, measuring just 4.5″ x 2″, however much larger sizes, up to 8″ x 3″ are readily available through exotic wood dealers such as those highlighted in the previous post above.

All major cuts were made using the Easy Wood Tool system on my Robust American Beauty lathe, although I do use Robert Sorby bowl gouges for light final passes before sanding.  Forward chucking was in a Nova Chuck, while reverse chucking was done using a Nova Chuck with Cole Jaws.  Sanding was with Gold and Green Wave sanding discs from Packard Woodworks. Final finish is Shellawax.

As always, I wish all my readers a great experience in whatever your wood working interests happen to be and to those who like working with lathes especially, do a good turn today!
