Monkeypod Bowl

I have reported on Monkeypod in the past so this is at least my second time turning this wood.

In reading back over my previous experience I am pleased to say that I had a better time turning this piece than I did the first Monkeypod I worked with.  This piece had no insect damage and it turned fairly clean with only some minor issues along the cross grain that were easily removed with routine sanding.

Once again, I noticed a distinct burning in the nose and throat when turning Monkeypod and especially so when sanding it, so I immediately put on the N95 respirator.

Monkeypod

This piece of Monkeypod has very distinctive dark brown stripes that really add to the interest of the piece.

I am happy to have had this second chance to work with Monkeypod, a wood that is fairly difficult to source and a wood of which I do not think I have further stock.  I can’t locate any further sources at this time so I am glad I had the opportunity to work with Monkeypod as it doesn’t look like it will be readily available any time soon.

All cuts were made using the Easy Wood Tool system on my Robust American Beauty lathe.  Forward chucking was in a Nova Chuck, while reverse chucking was done using a Nova Chuck with Cole Jaws.  Sanding was with Gold and Green Wave sanding discs from Packard Woodworks.  Final finish is Shellawax.

As always, I wish all my readers a great experience in whatever your wood working interests happen to be and to those who like working with lathes especially, do a good turn today!
