I have written about past experiences with Mimosa at length so this is more of a photo update featuring my latest work with Mimosa.

Again, I found the Mimosa easy to cut and quick to sand to a nice finish. As was true in the past, despite the open porosity of the Mimosa the final finish went on smoothly.

Mimosa Interior

I’ve softened in my opinion of Mimosa. It may not be the most exotic or colorful of the woods I have turned but its ease of working earns a lot of points for Mimosa. And this piece seems to have more going for it than the first piece I turned. There is good color contrast and streaking with the growth rings and in the right light there is evidence of chatoyance as well.

I am almost certain that this represents that last of the Mimosa that I have in stock and while it is readily available from Turning Blanks 4U in Florida, I prefer to focus on the wood stocks I already own plus a few very special species that I just love to work with (walnut, cherry, camphor, etc).

Mimosa Reverse

All cuts were made using the Easy Wood Tool system on my Robust American Beauty lathe. Forward chucking was in a Nova Chuck, while reverse chucking was done using a Nova Chuck with Cole Jaws. Sanding was with Gold and Green Wave sanding discs from Packard Woodworks. Final finish is Shellawax.

As always, I wish all my readers a great experience in whatever your wood working interests happen to be and to those who like working with lathes especially, do a good turn today!
