I just finished a set of nine figured Maple bowls that include all the major figures found in Maple including: Bird’s Eye, Curly (aka Flame or Tiger Stripe), Quilted, and Ambrosia.
Top from left to right is Ambrosia and Quilted. Middle row is Curly. Bottom row is Bird’s Eye.
The Ambrosia piece measures 9″ x 2.5″.
The Quilted Maple measures 7.5″ x 2″
The two lighter colored Curly maple pieces measure 8.5″ x 2″ and the darker piece in the center measures 9.5″ x 2″
The Bird’s Eye pieces measure 5.5″ x 2″
All major cuts were made using the Easy Wood Tool system on my Robust American Beauty lathe, although I do use Robert Sorby bowl gouges for light final passes before sanding. Forward chucking was in a Nova Chuck, while reverse chucking was done using a Nova Chuck with Cole Jaws. Sanding was with Gold and Green Wave sanding discs from Packard Woodworks. Final finish is Shellawax.
As always, I wish all my readers a great experience in whatever your wood working interests happen to be and to those who like working with lathes especially, do a good turn today!
