I have worked with and reported on Bocote in both spindle and bowl formats in the past so I won’t repeat that information here.
This set of 5 bowls in the largest single batch of Bocote that I have worked with and I was quite pleased with it. Bocote continues to be easy to turn and easy to clean up and prepare for the final finish. I continued to use Abranet screens for the minimal sanding required because this highly oily wood gums up regular sandpaper in a matter of seconds.
I would be happy to work with more Bocote in the future and in fact I got a bulk deal on 18 blanks from West Penn Hardwoods not long ago.
Those blanks are currently drying in the shop and I look forward to the time when they are seasoned and ready to turn.
I’d give it about five years, so no rush!
All major cuts were made using the Easy Wood Tool system on my Robust American Beauty lathe, although I do use Robert Sorby bowl gouges for light final passes before sanding. Forward chucking was in a Nova Chuck, while reverse chucking was done using a Nova Chuck with Cole Jaws. Sanding was with Abranet screens from Craft Supplies USA. Final finish is Shellawax.
