Small Bird’s Eye Maple Dish

This is a nice routine Birds Eye Maple dish that measures ~ 6″ x 2″. It was fast and easy to turn but the results were quite nice with good sheen and polish.  The degree of Bird’s Eye Figure seems moderate to me but it is clearly present.

Birds Eye Maple Interior

I have a hard time sourcing Bird’s Eye Maple and I think that speaks to the fact the figure is not common and most of the time trees with the figure are cut for veneer.

All cuts were made using the Easy Wood Tool system on my Robust American Beauty lathe.  Forward chucking was in a Nova Chuck, while reverse chucking was done using a Nova Chuck with Cole Jaws.  Sanding was with Gold and Green Wave sanding discs from Packard Woodworks.  Final finish is Shellawax.

As always, I wish all my readers a great experience in whatever your wood working interests happen to be and to those who like working with lathes especially, do a good turn today!
